I am always astonished that the same show can produce such opposite reactions in those who have seen it. I wonder, "Is it our individual sensibilities, the vicissitudes of each person's daily emotions and concerns, the variations in each performance?" Whatever the reason, I must say I find it amusing that my first words to my husband when the lights came up were, "Incredible how truly great plays hold up beyond the parameters of the time in which they were created." The very lines the critic found hackneyed moved me greatly for the heartfelt simplicity of their delivery, as well as the lyricism of the writing. I never comment on these sites, but I simply could not "click off" without noting that the things the writer cites as flaws were the very things we pointed to in our post-show conversations as particularly compelling. Viva la difference.
