Review: Boobs and Goombas: A Super Mario Burlesque/Gorilla Tango Theatre
Recommended Shows, Theater, Theater Reviews Add commentsMario and Luigi (those plumbers of Nintendo fame) have grown so sexually frustrated by always finding that their princess “is in another castle” that they’ve begun to see everything (including their enemies) take the shape of “beautiful ladies.” Mama mia! What’s a mustachioed Italian to do? Sporting accents closer to “Borat” than “The Godfather,” the brothers (themselves played by two beautiful ladies) strive to rescue their beloved Princess Peach; traveling down pipes, through a remarkably atmospheric Haunted Mansion, stopping off for a high-larious visit to Toad’s mushroom house, and avoiding numerous attacks by sexy adversaries (including a teasing turtle). Inside jokes and Nintendo folklore abound. Originally scheduled to end in October, “Boobs and Goombas” has been extended twice and was sold out when I attended—with standers cheering along the wall. The striptease gimmick may draw audiences in, but the jokes and the comedic timing of the actresses keep them coming back. (Zach Freeman)
